The tool addresses the choice of apple, pear, quince and Asian pear varieties suitable for organic or low-input farming, in order to reduce pesticide use while maintaining production quality.
Solution
The tool provides a list of resistant varieties suitable for organic and low-input farming.
Description
In this publication you will find information on several varieties of apple, pear, quince, poplar and Asian pear which are resistant to biotic and abiotic stress, to help growers who try to reduce pesticide use, while maintaining quality production.
Resistance or tolerance as a capability is a genetic trait of a breed. It can be tolerance to a particular pathogen or abiotic factor. More tolerance leads to lower production risk, which means a lower demand for plant protection products, thus reducing costs for the grower.
It also provides the consumer with less chemical pollution and healthier fruit.
The varieties presented in this publication have been selected on the basis of some Hungarian studies, the relevant literature and the recommendations of the breeders. It lists varieties suitable for large-scale cultivation as well as for home gardening and compiles the available knowledge to help environmentally conscious growers to get detailed information and guidance before planting.
