De verwachting is dat een toename van de vraag naar biologische voedermiddelen de beschikbaarheid van eiwitten zal beperken. Daarom zijn nieuwe en duurzamere eiwitrijke ingrediënten nodig.
Zeesterren worden gevangen om de predatie op gekweekte mosselen te verminderen. Zeesterrenmeel bevat 38-70% eiwit en kan worden gebruikt om andere eiwitrijke ingrediënten in monogastrische diervoeding gedeeltelijk te vervangen.
Het voeren van zeesterrenmeel geeft een vergelijkbare groei als het voeren van vismeel bij biggen. Bij leghennen blijven de eiproductie en -kwaliteit op een normaal niveau bij het voeren van maximaal 8% zeesterrenmeel.
