In 2025 zou de biologische productie 100% biologisch eiwit moeten gebruiken, maar de beschikbaarheid van biologisch eiwit is beperkt.
Mosselmeel kan andere, minder duurzame eiwitrijke ingrediënten, met name vismeel, vervangen in de voeding van biologische varkens en leghennen. Bovendien kunnen mosselen de watereutrofiëring verminderen door de opname van stikstof en fosfor.
De voeropname, de gewichtstoename en de eileg blijven op een normaal niveau wanneer mosselmeel wordt gevoerd aan vleesvarkens of leghennen. De kwaliteit van de eieren blijft goed, met een meer oranje dooier in vergelijking met het voeren van vismeel (figuur 1).
