So far, the fact that food is the most important occupation for intelligent and curious pigs has been disregarded. Currently feeding pigs - also in organic pig farming - is usually not oriented to the needs of the animals and is not species-appropriate in many respects. As a result, the pigs are frustrated and show behavioural disorders. In addition to animal welfare, sustainability in pig feeding is also receiving increasing attention. Especially the direct food competition with humans and the high feed imports provide justified criticism.
Solution
For the first time, this fact sheet does not focus on performance but addresses fattening pig feeding from an animal welfare and sustainability perspective.
Description
Animal welfare and sustainability are often not adressed enough in feeding of fattening pigs. In this leaflet, different strategies are presented with which the feeding of fattening pigs can be made more sustainable and species-appropriate. The recommendations in this leaflet apply primarily to fattening pigs, but are also important for piglets, breeding sows and boars.
