Zdravlje i dobrobit životinja
Briga o zdravlju životinja je jedan od ciljeva organske poljoprivrede, tu se prvenstveno upotrebljavaju preventivne mere lečenja. Zdravlje životinja zavisi od niza faktora poput okruženja, ishrane, smeštaja, društvenog ponašanja u stadu ili stadu kao i od opšteg upravljanja i uzgoja. Ovaj holistički pristup zdravlja životinja uzimaja u obzir sve ove faktore; zajedno čine osnovu za preventivno upravljanje stadom.
Kada se životinje koje proizvode hranu razbole, uglavnom se leče upotrebom ortodoksnih veterinarskih lekova, poput antibiotika. Povrh toga, česta upotreba takvih lekova rezultira razvojem mikroorganizama otpornih na antibiotike, koji se mogu naci u domaćim životinjama. Povrh toga, putem fekalija i urina životinjski se mikroorganizmi otporni na antibiotike ispuštaju u okolinu gde se sporo razgrađuju.
U organskoj poljoprivredi kod lečenja bolesnih životinja preferiraju se metode alternativne veterine (npr. fitoterapija ili homeopatija). Hemijski sintetizovani veterinarski lekovi moraju se svesti na minimum i treba im se pribegavati samo u hitnim slučajevima.
