En vigtig udfordring er fortsat at opnå økologiske og bæredygtige monogastriske fodringsstrategier: at opfylde deres behov for protein og essentielle aminosyrer med lokalt fremskaffede foderstoffer.
Fodring af insekter giver nye muligheder for at overvinde proteingabet i økologisk landbrug. Insektfoder er et bæredygtigt og lokalt alternativ til almindeligt anvendte proteinfoderkilder.
Levende insekter og larvemel kan erstatte soja i foderrationer. Insekternes aminosyreprofil svarer til fiskens, fjerkræets og svinets ernæringsbehov, især hvad angår aminosyrer som lysin, threonin, methionin og tryptofan.
