Im Jahr 2025 soll in der ökologischen Produktion 100 % Bio-Protein verwendet werden, die Verfügbarkeit von Bio-Protein ist jedoch begrenzt.
Muschelmehl kann andere weniger nachhaltige, proteinreiche Zutaten, insbesondere Fischmehl, in der Ernährung von Bio-Schweinen und Legehennen ersetzen. Darüber hinaus können Muscheln durch die Aufnahme von Stickstoff und Phosphor die Eutrophierung des Wassers verringern.
Bei der Verfütterung von Muschelmehl an Mastschweine oder Legehennen bleiben die Futteraufnahme, die Gewichtszunahme und die Legeleistung auf einem normalen Niveau. Die Qualität der Eier bleibt gut und der Dotter ist im Vergleich zur Fütterung von Fischmehl orangefarben (Abbildung 1).
