Se espera que un aumento en la demanda de alimentos orgánicos limite la disponibilidad de proteínas. Por lo tanto, se necesitan ingredientes ricos en proteínas nuevos y más sostenibles.
Se capturan estrellas de mar para reducir la depredación de los mejillones de cultivo. La harina de estrella de mar contiene entre un 38 y un 70 % de proteínas y puede utilizarse para sustituir parcialmente otros ingredientes ricos en proteínas en los piensos para animales monogástricos.
La alimentación con harina de estrellas de mar proporciona un crecimiento comparable al de la harina de pescado en los lechones. En el caso de las ponedoras, la producción y la calidad de los huevos se mantienen en niveles normales cuando se les da hasta un 8% de harina de estrellas de mar.
