De eiwitvoorziening van biologische varkens en pluimvee vereist een zorgvuldig beheer om een adequate aanvoer van essentiële aminozuren te garanderen en overvoeding te voorkomen. Er moeten alternatieve eiwitbronnen worden gebruikt om in de benodigde aminozurenbalans te voorzien.
Bijproducten van productieprocessen zijn nuttige alternatieven. Maïskiemcake is een bijproduct van de productie van zetmeel en maïsolie, evenals een bijproduct van het brouwen.
Maïskiemkoek bevat hogere gehalten aan essentiële aminozuren dan hele maïs, maar minder energie, wat zou moeten helpen bij het rantsoeneren van trager groeiende varkens- en pluimveerassen.
