De opname van sojameel in het pluimveedieet is relevant, als bron van hoogwaardige eiwitten. Omdat soja echter wordt geplant voor zowel menselijke als dierlijke consumptie, zijn de kosten hoog.
Bij de productie van tofu en sojamelk ontstaat okara als afvalproduct dat vers of gedroogd kan worden toegevoegd aan pluimveerantsoenen, waardoor zowel de opname van sojameel als de kosten worden verlaagd. Vanwege het hoge vezelgehalte moet de hoeveelheid okara in het dieet beperkt worden om een afname van de voeropname te voorkomen.
De opneming van okara in het pluimveedieet heeft verscheidene voordelen. Het belangrijkste voordeel houdt verband met duurzaamheid, doordat een bijproduct wordt gebruikt en niet wordt verspild. Het tweede voordeel is een verminderde afhankelijkheid van sojameel als bron van eiwitten en aminozuren. Ten slotte leidt de daling van het sojameel tot lagere voederkosten.
