The promotion of healthy, long-lived animals is particularly important for organic farming, because only in this way can animal husbandry be sustainable and biologically sensible. The health of farm animals depends not only on species-appropriate husbandry, feeding and care but also strongly on breeding and genetics. To promote animal health, fertility and functional exterior, animal characteristics must increasingly be defined as breeding goals. Organic breeding goals include natural reproduction methods, disease resistance and robustness, aiming for locally-adapted and dual-purpose breeds.
