Animal housing and equipment

Animal housing and equipment

Although organic animal husbandry emphasises natural behaviour and therefore, the free movement of animals, appropriate housing is also essential. Species-specific mandatory minimum spaces and other design specifics for organic husbandry housing buildings ensure the animals' welfare by providing them with sufficient space to stand naturally, lie down, turn around, groom themselves and assume all natural postures and movements. Buildings should provide appropriate insulation, temperature, ventilation and hygiene. Bedding materials should also be organic as the animals often consume them. Animal husbandry requires other equipment, for example, fences, feeders, and milking devices.
