A jelenlegi termelési rendszerek veszélyeztetik a sertések egészségét és jólétét a takarmány szerkezeti összetevőinek hiánya miatt, ami a gyomorfekély kialakulásához kapcsolódik.
A szálastakarmányt tartalmazó étrend, például a fűszilázs etetése javítja a sertésbél egészségét.
A gyomorfekélyek számának csökkenése az állatok jólétének növekedéséhez vezet. Ezenkívül a durva takarmány, például a fűszilázs kielégítheti a sertések gyökeresedési igényét, és a farokharapás csökkenéséhez vezethet. Továbbá a sertések hosszabb ideig vannak elfoglalva a takarmányozással, ami az unalom csökkenéséhez vezet. Mivel a fűszilázs jó tápértékkel rendelkezik, ideális kiegészítője a koncentrált takarmánynak.
